Most documents first need to be notarized before you submit them for authentication. Contact 416-451-5553 or email info@notary-toronto.ca and we can help with the notarization. Once you have notarized your documents you can submit them for authentication.

The Consulate of Brazil requires documents to be authenticated by the Official Document Services of the Ontario government, which you can read through here!

GENERAL INFORMATION

In general, only original documents can be legalized. This is typical for original copies of official government documents like birth, marriage and death certificates and others, duly signed and officially stamped, may be submitted directly to the Consulate for legalization. These documents do not first need to be notarized or authenticated.

Specific Documents:

Other documents that are not issued by the Government of Ontario must first be signed in front of a Notary Public and then authenticated. These documents include, but are not limited to: Power of Attorneys, Letters, Affidavits, Agreements and Contracts. If you wish to legalize Corporate Minute books or other documents which typically do not contain a signature, you must attach an Affidavit signed by an officer or director of the company. The Affidavit must reasonably describe the contents of the unsigned documents. Notary-toronto.ca can help you draft this affidavit, just contact us at 416-451-5553 or by email at info@notary-toronto.ca.

Affidavits containing attached copies of corporate documents must state the following:
  1. The full name of the deponent and list their relationship to the company.
  2. List the attached copies of the corporate documents and state that those are true copies of the original documents extracted from the corporation files, from which the said original documents cannot be removed.
  3. Be signed by the deponent and sworn or affirmed before a person authorized to administer oaths or affirmations.
Copies of certain documents can only be legalized if they have been certified by their originating governmental authority (meaning the government stamps the document). These types of documents can be submitted directly to the Consulate for Legalization.

Limited Partnerships Reports or other similar documents issued by the Ontario Business Information System and containing the electronic signature of the Registrar of the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services must be certified directly by Official Document Services (see location above). These documents do not need to be notarized and the Brazilian Consulate will not legalize them.

Legalization of copies of government issued photo identification may be notarized, and authenticated as described above. Once authenticated, bring the document to the Brazilian Consulate for legalization.

The Brazilian Consulate in Toronto will not legalize:
  1. Certified true copies of documents in general other than identification documents listed above.
  2. Certified true copies of/or affidavits containing agreements in general, power of attorney or private contracts cannot be legalized.
  3. Certificate of compliance/existence and other documents issued by Industry Canada/Corporations Canada These documents require a special process only completed by the Brazilian Embassy in Ottawa.
