Documents needing to be legalized for use in Mexico need to undergo a process of authentication.

The second step is to have your documents authenticated. The following documents need to be authenticated by Global Affairs Canada: powers of attorney, school grades, diplomas (university or college only), school transcripts (university or college only), certificates of birth or marriage, degrees/certificates of divorce, notarized business papers, affidavits made before a public notary, etc. 

However, the following documents can be authenticated by the Official Document Services: powers of attorney, school grades (university and college only), diplomas (university and college only), school transcripts (university and college only), certificates of birth or marriage, degrees/certificates of divorce, notarized business papers, affidavits made before a public notary.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Toronto legalizes documents issued in Ontario or Manitoba. There may be additional requirements for documents issued elsewhere. Please feel free to contact info@notary-toronto.ca for more information. 

To legalize a document for Mexico, the Consulate recommends the following:

Requests for legalization can be sent through the mail (by courier or registered mail) and they must be previously authenticated (see the address of the Consulate provided at the top of this article, if documents are not properly authenticated, the documents will be returned without being legalized) 
  • Include a letter asking for the documents to be legalized (be sure to include the following: contact information, full address, telephone number, and email
  • Be sure to include a return envelope (courier or registered mail)
  • Include payment of the appropriate fees (which can be found here! Note, fees are adjusted at the beginning of every month)
  • The Mexican Consulate will not legalize documents received by courier from abroad
