In order to legalize documents for use in the Netherlands, you must make an appointment. The Consulate is only open Monday to Friday between 9 am and 12 pm. The following are instructions on how to legalize your documents for use in the Netherlands, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St Eustatius, and St Maarten.

To use a document from Canada in the Netherlands, you must first have it notarized and then authenticated by Global Affairs Canada. Please click here for instructions on how to get your documents authenticated by Global Affairs Canada. 

To be legalized by the Consulate of the Netherlands, the following rules apply to your document(s):
  • Must be the original.must be included.
  • If your document(s) are not in English, French, German, or Dutch, you will need to have them translated by a sworn translator. The translation must also be legalized and the translator has to be registered by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario. 
  • Documents such as an official copy of a birth, marriage, divorce, or death certificate do not need to be notarized and can be submitted directly to Global Affairs Canada for authentication (see here) before being legalized by the Consulate of the Netherlands. You can request these documents from Service Ontario
  • Documents to apply for a Dutch passport must be authenticated by Global Affairs Canada then legalized by the Dutch Consulate.
  • The cost of legalization is dependent on the type of document. Please click here for a list of all Consular Fees. If you legalize your documents in person, the Consulate can accept cash, certified cheque (Netherlands Embassy), money order (Netherlands Embassy), or credit card. If you send in your legalization request by mail, you must include a certified cheque or money order made out to Netherlands Embassy. You can also pay by credit card if you include the appropriate authorization details. 
  • It is advisable to send in a cover letter with your documents telling the Consulate what it is you wish done. Remember to include your address, phone number, and email address in case the Consulate of the Netherlands has any questions for you.
  • If you submit your documents by mail, the Consulate will mail you your documents by regular mail free of charge. However, if you need your documents faster, be sure to include a pre-stamped Xpresspost envelope from Canada Post.
