Certificate of Origin

Certificate of Origin

Notary-toronto.ca can help notarize a Certificate of Origin. A Certificate of Origin is a attestation which states that particular goods ready for exportation have been wholly obtained, produced, manufactured, or processed in a particular country. Certificates of Origin may be requested for a number of reasons, people, and organizations such as customs administrations, importers, freight forwarders or banks for clearance of letters of credit.

Typically, a Certificate of Origin must accompany your goods across international borders and it is good practice to have the Certificate authenticated by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The specifics of what is need for each Certificate depends on a wide variety of factors such as country the good are being shipped to, the value of the shippable goods, and the frequency of the shipments. A Certificate or Declaration should be sworn in front of a notary public and then authenticated by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Below is a short walk through of the steps needed to obtain a valid notarized and authenticated Certificate of Origin.

  1. Prepare your Certificate of Origin. The specific Certificate of Origin you should be using is based on the destination country of your goods. Please click here to find the specific Certificate of Origin you should use. You can search the form field for "Certificate of Origin" and the total list will populate. You then simply select whichever document corresponds with the country your goods are being shipped to.
  2. Once you have filled out the appropriate Certificate of Origin, fill it out but do not sign the document yet. You must submit the filled out (but unsigned) Certificate of Origin along with proof your company is registered in Canada (either federal or provincial) by email to certification@chamber.ca. You can either send a picture or a pdf, but a clear pdf is much more likely to be accepted.
  3. Once you have received confirmation that your paperwork is in order, you can now sign the Certificate of Origin in front of a duly appointed notary public. All notaries associated with notary-toronto.ca have been appointed by the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario.
  4. When your documents have been properly notarized, you can bring the documents to 901-55 University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M5J 2H7 between 9 am to 4 pm (the office will authenticate your documents up until 4:30 pm, but you should arrive with time to spare).
