Authentication (Global Affairs Canada)

Authentication (Global Affairs Canada)

There are two ways to authenticate a document: (1) Global Affairs Canada (Ottawa), or (2) Official Document Services (Toronto). Each Embassy and Consulate has a preference, so be sure to consult the country specific information found here regarding their authentication requirements.

The first step is to have the documents notarized before a valid Canadian notary public. All notaries associated with notary-toronto.ca have been appointed by the Ministry of the Attorney General.

The second step is to have your documents authenticated by Global Affairs Canada. The cost for authentication is free.

To authenticate documents in person:
  1. Download and fill out a "Request for Authentication Services Form" which can be found here.
  2. Bring the notarized document and the "Request for Authentication Services Form" to the following address: JLAC- Authentication Services Section, 1st floor (Look for the signs: “JLAC- Authentication Services Section”), 111 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1N 1J1.
*note, this office is only open from 10 am to 12 pm, and between 2 pm and 3 pm Monday through Thursday
